I build this rail out of a 20’, 1.5” piece of box iron. The box iron is a little thin walled I think. I got the 1/16” stuff. It is a little wobbly at length. All the snow melted out of the yard in the past few days {RAIN at 4500’ in January?!}, so I haven’t gotten to try it yet. I need to take it apart and drive up the hill with it and rip it up. I cut up a shorter rail I had built in the past and just welded this box on top. I thought that would make it a little sturdier, but nope.
This rail will get taken apart and made into a 10’ fun box. I’ll post that soon. The next piece of iron I buy will be 2” at least, and 1/8” or thicker walled. I think that will help with the wobble at length.
The pipe laying on the ground is my Super-Mega-Rail or SMR. The SMR weighs around 500lbs at 20’. I drag it around with the truck. I might put some feet on it to get some height out of it… It’s just too big to move though… so it’s staying a “in the yard rail.” In any case the 1” walls make it super sturdy!
More to come on the rail building extravaganza.
